On Twitter on Tuesday, Rosanne Barr tweeted that if “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby.” The tweet was referring to President Barack Obama’s former senior adviser Valerie Jarrett. A few hours after, poof! Roseanne is removed from the ABC Network.
In light of the recent cancellation Rosanne is blaming Ambien for her racist post.
BUT, the company has already clapped back with Ambien-marker saying to Roseanne, “While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.”
And, they were not the only company to throw shade on Barr’s tweets. The Twitter account for the Dictionary.com chimed in tweeting: “The name Ambien is thought to come from the word ‘ambient’ or similar words in French. Ambient does not mean ‘prone to making racist comments,’ but it does mean ‘of the surrounding area or environment.’”
Despite the Roseanne reboot’s high ratings and its upcoming season being one of the biggest shows on its lineup. Barr’s “twitter fingers” ultimately led to her shows demise. Shortly, before the cancellation, comedian and consulting producer Wanda Sykes quit via Twitter. Sara Gilbert, who played Roseanne’s daughter and was a driving force behind the revival, said she was “disappointed in her actions to say the least.”
Though Rosanne apologized, ABC was not having it. The president of ABC Entertainment and may I add, the FIRST African-American woman in charge of a major broadcast network – said the comment “is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show.”
Jarret spoke out on the tweets saying while she has people that have her back, her concern is for the others who experience racism every day. As much, as we all probably would have liked to see and often want to separate the character from actor we are glad to see ABC, Disney Networks, Hulu and more standing up towards an issue in this country that is much bigger than all of us. May the Childish Gambino fade in…
